Practical Pens Pocket Pen
Welcome to another review!
This time we are scaling it down a bit and looking and this lovely little pocket pen from Daniel Rizk of @practical_pens.
I have been toying with the idea of a pocket pen for a while now but I wanted one with a #6 nib, screw to post cap, one that is comfy in the hand and I wanted it to be affordable.
This little beauty certainly ticks all those boxes... and its 3D printed!
Now I am sure some of you may have seen another pen maker who makes 3D printed pens, but those are very big. I wanted something I could carry around with me, something that would fit in my pocket, but would still be comfy when writing for longer periods.
I found @practical_pens on instagram, had a look at some of the designs and became curious. It just so happened that at the time I visited their page, Daniel had finished developing and fine tuning his pocket pen offering.
We made contact, had a few discussions, colours were chosen and work began.
I have to say Daniel has great customer service and the whole process of fine tuning what I wanted was joyous.
There is a large variety of different coloured filaments you can have, even neon or polychromatic ones!
I went for a black/charcoal and deep purple combination.
The finish surpassed my expectations!
The material, although matte, sparkles...and has a texture to it... it's great!
The design, in my eyes, is very well executed.
The body part of the pen is tiny.
The section screws into the body allowing just enough room for a small standard international cartridge.
There is a texture to the section which is also slightly concave making for a comfy and secure grip.
The cap threads are positioned at the end of the body and may be felt by some users depending on their grip, but they are not sharp. There is plenty of room on the section for me without feeling the threads at all.
The section dies feel a bit on the hard side.
I have a relaxed to moderately firm grip and do not find this to be an issue.
I do know that by the time you read this Daniel will have a new filament material available; a cellulose composite material that should feel bit softer, more organic if you like. But for me the hardness of the section isn't really an issue.
The short body transitions with a step-down leading to the rear portion which has threads for posting the pen.
The transitions are nicely bevelled with no sharp edges.
The whole design is compact and fun.
The cap is rounded where it screws onto the body, then tapers slightly and finishes in a square finial with rounded corners.
The transition occurs smoothly on the last third of the cap and adds an nice element to the design.
Daniel can incorporate a finial disc on the end of the cap in any colour if you fancy it.
I went for one on mine as I think a different colour finial adds yet another element to the design.
When the pen is posted, it is comparable to the size of an un-posted Lamy Al-Star, perhaps slightly longer, but it is considerably girthier and does have a #6 nib.
It takes one complete turn to cap/un-cap the pen and 1/4 of a turn to post/un-post the cap.
So no hardship there then.
I have tried to use it un-posted, and I can categorically say it's not really possible...It was after all designed to post.
I'm really impressed with this pen.
I love the design, I love the fact that it feels like a "normal", all be it very light pen when you are using it, I love how girthy it is, I love the length and I love the fact it has a #6 nib.
Add to that Daniel's superb customer service and the whole package is fantastic.
Factor in the price, and you have a very practical pen for your pocket.
A pen that is small enough to take with you everywhere; and a pen that writes straight out the box for pocket money...practically.
What more could you want?
Being 3D printed it's i find it pretty cool too!
